Summary

For fans of Grey’s Anatomy and Seven Days in June, this dazzling debut novel by Shirlene Obuobi explores that time in your life when you must decide what you want, how to get it, & who you are, all while navigating love, friendship, and the realization that the path you’re traveling is going to be a bumpy ride。

Ghanaian-American Angela Appiah has checked off all the boxes for the “Perfect Immigrant Daughter。”

- Enroll in an elite medical school
- Snag a suitable lawyer/doctor/engineer boyfriend
- Surround self with a gaggle of successful and/or loyal friends

But then it quickly all falls apart: her boyfriend dumps her, she bombs the most important exam of her medical career, and her best friend pulls away。 And her parents, whose approval seems to hinge on how closely she follows the path they chose, are a lot less proud of their daughter。 It’s a quarter life crisis of epic proportions。

Angie, who has always faced her problems by working “twice as hard to get half as far,” is at a loss。 Suddenly, she begins to question everything: her career choice, her friendships, even why she's attracted to men who don't love her as much as she loves them。

And just when things couldn’t get more complicated, enter Ricky Gutierrez— brilliant, thoughtful, sexy, and most importantly, seems to see Angie for who she is instead of what she can represent。

Unfortunately, he’s also got “wasteman” practically tattooed across his forehead, and Angie’s done chasing mirages of men。 Or so she thinks。 For someone who’s always been in control, Angie realizes that there’s one thing she can’t plan on: matters of her heart。

I LOVED THIS BOOK! What a poignant portrayal of what it means to be an immigrant, of growing up surrounding by friends and family but finding the strength to tackle problems on your own in this amazing coming-of-age, confident masterpiece of a novel。Of course Angie was the perfect blend of lovable and real, I found myself sometimes facepalming and groaning "Angieeee" as she worked through her mistakes and grew as a soon-to-be physician and as a person contending with changing relationships。 I wa I LOVED THIS BOOK! 4。5 stars! Such a sweet, hilarious, and (for a nerdy, overly romantic, child of immigrants medical student) relatable story。 I loved the complexities of the characters and the tensions that were artfully built throughout the book。 My one gripe with the book is that the final resolution felt a little bit rushed - I feel like having more time for the relationship between Angie and Ricky's family to develop may have made the ending feel more real。 Overall, I loved this book and read it in two sitti 4。5 stars! I really enjoyed this read! The struggles the MC goes through are very relatable。 I found her inner dialogue and thought process understandable。 Angie is a medical student who is dealing with school, family, friendship, and relationship stress while constantly trying to foresee her future。 She continues to have to deal with these deep struggles and sometimes her own insecurities。 There were so many layers to this book and I would definitely recommend!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Not for me。 Slow burn (pg 260+?!), a completely unavailable love interest at the beginning starting things while in a different relationship, and a main character I had a really hard time finding any ability to root for along the way。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved this book, and learned about med school and Ghanaian culture along the way。 I really enjoyed the characters, though felt that the ending dragged a bit。 I wished the characters would get their acts together and stop getting in their own way - repeatedly。 Solid 3。5, but rounded up。

This book was phenomenal, it was a slow burn (for me) but so so so rewarding。 I’m pre med so i loved all the science/hospital stuff。 I loved Angie, like seriously wish she was real so we can be besties。 I love characters that feel real and she very much felt real to me。I loved pretty much everyone in this book, even Angie’s mum by the end。 There was a lot of angst (again for me) and it was frustrating but i think it made the good parts feel so much more pleasing。 like finally breathing after hol This book was phenomenal, it was a slow burn (for me) but so so so rewarding。 I’m pre med so i loved all the science/hospital stuff。 I loved Angie, like seriously wish she was real so we can be besties。 I love characters that feel real and she very much felt real to me。I loved pretty much everyone in this book, even Angie’s mum by the end。 There was a lot of angst (again for me) and it was frustrating but i think it made the good parts feel so much more pleasing。 like finally breathing after holding your breath。 i very much enjoyed learning about Angie, her culture, her past, her thoughts and feelings。 I loved the relationship her and Ricky created before they even dated。 When you’re falling for someone that euphoric high you get when you’re around/talking/thinking about them is the best feeling and this book captured that so well。Shae & Nia we’re adorable, i would love a whole book just about them and then another one about Shae and Ricky as kids!!! I have wanted to read this book for months and now that i have read it, I am sad to say I am disappointed。 I sometimes felt like this book was too much。 Like it's trying to be many things at the same time。。。 The side characters of the story feel one dimensional and very under-develloped。 I sometimes found myself bored and skimming through the pages。。。 The romance would have been good if it wasn't for everything overwhelming the story。 Ricky is a very good love interest but I felt like he was mak I have wanted to read this book for months and now that i have read it, I am sad to say I am disappointed。 I sometimes felt like this book was too much。 Like it's trying to be many things at the same time。。。 The side characters of the story feel one dimensional and very under-develloped。 I sometimes found myself bored and skimming through the pages。。。 The romance would have been good if it wasn't for everything overwhelming the story。 Ricky is a very good love interest but I felt like he was making too much compromises for Angie while she didn't give him any leeway。 These characters are supposed to be in their early adulthood but some of them ( Nia ) are acting like teenagers。 None of the side characters have a particular arc and it's really frustrating。 The only thing that kept me reading was Angie's relatability regarding her relationship with her parents。 。。。more

Less of a romance (even though it's tacked on) and more of a contemporary story about a young woman's "coming of age" as she tackles medical school, her family, and life in general。 I mean, there's romance, of course, but it's not a "romance"。 The former aspects play stronger roles in the story。Worth a read。 3。5/5 Less of a romance (even though it's tacked on) and more of a contemporary story about a young woman's "coming of age" as she tackles medical school, her family, and life in general。 I mean, there's romance, of course, but it's not a "romance"。 The former aspects play stronger roles in the story。Worth a read。 3。5/5 。。。more

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the advance reader copy。This was a really enjoyable book about a third year medical student navigating school, family, friendships, love and self-discovery。 Angie was an interesting and layered character with some strong friendships。 I enjoyed the medical school setting and seeing some of the rotations that she was on as she found the area and focus of medicine meant for her。 Her family felt a little flat development wise, but I enjoyed seeing them。

Thoroughly enjoyed。 I loved the accurate depiction of life in medical training balanced with the fun of a romcom。 The characters felt real, with a healthy amount of personal flaws, and it was awesome to gain a deeper appreciation for cultures different from my own。 (Also, the ending was perfect and I cried a little, which rarely happens for me in these sorts of books!) Definitely worth a read, especially if you’ve ever studied or worked in medicine。

Absolutely adored this book。 Although the relationship between the main character and her love interest might have been dragged out a little too long, I really enjoyed relating to authors experiences as a medical student。 I remember the stress and anxiety about doing well in the boards and rotations。 Really enjoyed learning some traditions from Ghana。 Over all great and light read。

This book was perfect。 An absolute delight。 Sweet but not saccharine; the conversations felt very authentic, and I delighted in the emphasis placed on friendship love and how it is different from romantic love and just as important。 I can attest to the medical school journey being spot on。 I appreciate the attention given to the challenges of being a Black woman navigating the hidden curriculum of white supremacy ingrained in medical training。 I can’t believe Dr。 Obuobi wrote this during medical This book was perfect。 An absolute delight。 Sweet but not saccharine; the conversations felt very authentic, and I delighted in the emphasis placed on friendship love and how it is different from romantic love and just as important。 I can attest to the medical school journey being spot on。 I appreciate the attention given to the challenges of being a Black woman navigating the hidden curriculum of white supremacy ingrained in medical training。 I can’t believe Dr。 Obuobi wrote this during medical training—in what free time???? 10/10。 。。。more

I ADORED this book。 The stresses and trials of medical school were perfectly realised, from dealing with shitty senior colleagues to cramming for exams, but I loved seeing the heart and care for patients that Angie retained despite it all。 And Ricky。。。 don't even get me started on Ricky。 I have never seen a love interest more perfectly designed for me! Oh how I wanted to like this book! Angie is an underrepresented medical student who falls for Ricky and juggles exams, patient care, overbearing parents, and her complicated feelings for Ricky。 There were many things I related to in the book (ugh Step 1 score dictating life), but I just couldn’t get behind the Angie-Ricky relationship… to on-again-off-again and borderline instalove。

This is an own voices book about a black woman trying to juggle medical school, her parents, friendships and a love life。 I wanted this to be a bit more woman’s fiction and less of a love story。 I did enjoy a lot of the medical terms and what she’s going through as a medical student。 I liked that she showed med school is so intensive and other parts of your life are probably going to suffer。
